Bert & Evelyn Waggoner

Berten was born in New Plymouth, Idaho, in 1942. His parents were church planters who started and led churches in Idaho, Oregon, California, Colorado and Utah.

He is a graduate of Southern Bible College. While a student in 1962 he married his wife Evelyn, a Houstonian. He then went on to receive his Master of Divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary. After graduation, he and Evelyn returned to his alma mater in Houston to teach and chair the Department of Biblical and Theological Studies.

Berten and Evelyn left the academic world in 1976 to plant a church in Southwest Houston. This church merged with Church in the City (an Assembly of God church) in 1979. He pastored there until 1994. Berten met John Wimber in Anaheim, California in 1983. This was the beginning of a friendship which would eventually lead to Church in the City (Houston Vineyard) joining the Vineyard USA. Shortly after Berten entered the Vineyard movement, John Wimber asked him to serve as the Regional Overseer for the Southern Region and to serve on the National Board.

In 1994 Berten and Evelyn and 40 members of the Houston Vineyard were sent out to plant a Vineyard in Sugar Land, Texas which he pastored until 2009. This church remains a vibrant, healthy and growing church in the southwest quadrant of Houston. Berten has been serving as National Director of Vineyard USA since September of 2000 when the Board of Vineyard USA appointed him.

Berten loves to study theology, fish, golf and play with his grandkids. He enjoys the opportunities he has been given as National Director to teach and minister around the world. He has a deep love for the Church in all of its expressions and a passion to see people come into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Berten and Evelyn have two sons, Art and Reagan, two daughter-in-laws, both named Deanna, and five grandchildren, Trey, Eliece, Tyler, Corbin and Conner.
