A six-part sermon series based on Matthew 28 that asks what it looks like to follow Jesus on mission, doubts and all, and to make more and better disciples where we live. Free to use and adapt, from VCF of Pearland in Texas.
This Missional Moment is a six-week sermon series on Matthew 28:16–20. VCF of Pearland in Texas preached through the Great Commission one phrase at a time and has shared its sermon notes so other churches can do the same. Six weeks in one short passage gives your people time to take it in and start living it.
The series begins with Jesus’ claim to all authority and his decision to send his followers out under it. From there it looks at the line many of us skip, that the disciples worshiped him “but some doubted,” which is good news for anyone in your church who shows up unsure. The third message takes on a tension most pastors know well, between reaching new people and growing the people you have, and argues that Jesus asks for both.
The last three messages get practical. Sermon 4 pairs Matthew 28 with Matthew 9, where Jesus has compassion on the crowds, and calls listeners to move closer to the needs around them. Sermon 5 is about knowing Scripture in community and living in a way others want to learn from. Sermon 6 closes with a pattern people can remember: receive from God, then share what you’ve received. Running through the whole series is a simple challenge to “reach for one and walk with one.”
Each download includes a full sermon outline with the key text, illustrations, application, and supporting Scriptures, with plenty of room for your own stories and context. Graphic files are included for promotion and screens. Vineyard USA is sharing this series from VCF of Pearland with the wider Vineyard family, so use as much of it as helps and adapt it however your church needs.
