“A Sabbath rest still remains for the people of God… Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest.” —Hebrews 4:9,11

We live in a very busy and productive culture and the everyday realities of the job of a pastoral leader can be overwhelming. With constant ministry demands and the larger than life expectations of people, we can encounter exhaustion and even burnout if not careful. Cultivating Intentional places of rest and reflection for a leader are essential for longevity in ministry. This also will include places and people of discernment and support.

A weekly Sabbath is the place to start finding this rhythm of rest. At first it may be difficult to do, especially with a busy family and a long to do list! But the benefits to the mind, body and soul are worth the effort to protect this spiritual discipline! Read: ‘Sabbath: Saying No Leads to Saying Yes’. Also, watch Webcast: ‘Work and Rest Balance’

Incorporating longer stretches of quiet and reflection is also critical in the life of a leader. The detox from busyness and hurry may be challenging at first. But having a peaceful space to rest and discern, ultimately hearing the voice of God more clearly is such a beautiful gift! Oftentimes, retreat leaders or spiritual directors can help lead this time for a leader.
