Dear Vineyard Leaders,
Last week, Jan and I celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary. 45 years! We have been married longer than some of you have been alive – oh my.
I have been reflecting on our marriage, and while it took all of five minutes for the pastor to proclaim us husband and wife, we have had to “show up” daily, and this has created the depth of the relationship we enjoy nearly five decades later.
As we are facing so many issues at once – COVID-19, everything shutting down, pivoting from public meetings to online meetings, concern of finances, friends and parishioners losing their jobs, children not finishing the school year, the continued manifestation of racism in our country, and the emotional toll all of this has brought – what more can we say?
Here’s what I’ve been saying to myself and friends:
- Engage where you are locally. You and I may not be able to change everything at once, help everyone at once, and be everywhere at once, but we can be where we are.
- Show up. It doesn’t sound like much, but it means everything to those that are there.
- Keep showing up. When you keep showing up, it speaks of a lifestyle, not an event.
- Commit to a long obedience in the same direction.
As you lead your churches and continue to love your neighbors, keep standing in the gaps. Keep announcing the Gospel of the Kingdom and the Kingdom that is coming. Keep speaking against injustice and caring for the marginalized. This is part of our holy assignment.
We know the system did not break overnight, and thus something as big and entrenched as what we are facing will not be uprooted in one day by one thought, one sermon, or one action.
This work is going to require a long obedience in the same direction. It will require us to continue to show up and be in the context of our local realities and relationships. One day at a time, with a sustained commitment to the long haul.
If we commit to a long obedience in the same direction, we are on a steady march toward our Revelation 7:9 destiny. The Kingdom is here, and yet, it is still coming.
Friends – let us walk in that way together, slow as it may be. Engage and continue showing up – and we’ll get there.

Queridos Líderes de La Viña,
La semana pasada, Jan y yo celebramos nuestro aniversario de bodas número 45. ¡45 años! Hemos estado casados por más tiempo del que algunos de ustedes han estado vivos – qué increíble. He estado reflejando sobre nuestro matrimonio, y que mientras al pastor le tomó sólo cinco minutos declararnos marido y mujer, hemos tenido que “estar presentes” cada día, y esto ha creado la profundidad de relación que gozamos casi cinco décadas después.
Al enfrentar tantas situaciones a la vez – COVID-19, todo cerrándose, la transición de reuniones públicas a online, preocupación por las finanzas, amigos y congregantes perdiendo sus trabajos, niños no terminando el año escolar, la continua manifestación del racismo en nuestro país, y el desgaste emocional que todo esto ha traído – ¿qué más podemos decir?
Esto es lo que me he estado diciendo a mí mismo y a mis amigos:
- Comprométete en donde te encuentras localmente. Tu y yo quizás no podremos cambiar todo a la vez, ayudar a todos a la vez y estar en todas partes a la vez, pero podemos estar donde estamos.
- Hazte presente. No suena como mucho, pero significa todo para los que están allí.
- Continúa estando presente. Cuando continúas estando presente, eso habla de un estilo de vida, no un evento.
- Comprométete a una obediencia larga en la misma dirección.
Al liderar sus iglesias y al continuar amando a sus vecinos, sigan parados en las brechas. Sigan anunciando el Evangelio del Reino y del Reino venidero. Sigan denunciando la injusticia y cuidando de los marginados. Esto es parte de nuestra responsabilidad santa.
Sabemos que el sistema no se quebró de la noche a la mañana, por lo tanto, algo tan grande e internalizado como el racismo sistemático no va a ser desarraigado en un día con un pensamiento, un sermón, o una acción.
Este trabajo va a requerir una obediencia larga en la misma dirección. Nos va a demandar que continuemos estando presentes y que permanezcamos en el contexto de nuestras realidades y relaciones locales. Un día a la vez, con un compromiso sostenido a largo plazo.
Si nos comprometemos a una larga obediencia en la misma dirección, estaremos en una marcha firme hacia nuestro destino según Apocalipsis 7:9. El Reino está aquí, y sin embargo, todavía está viniendo.
Amigos – caminemos ese recorrido juntos, por más lento que sea. Comprométanse y continúen estando presentes – y llegaremos.
